Relocating To Ireland for a Contract Role

Moving to Ireland for a contract role is exciting and while the weather might keep you guessing, everything else can be simple with the right support. Here’s what you’ll need to get started, and how Contracting PLUS can help make the whole process easier.

1. Right to Work

Before you begin contracting, you must have permission to work in Ireland. If you’re an Irish citizen or hold an EU passport, you’re already covered. If not, you’ll need a visa or work permit through the Irish Department of Justice & Equality.

2. Personal Public Service (PPS) Number

Your PPS Number is your unique social insurance number and you’ll need it to work in Ireland. You apply for it through an Intreo Office (in person, or by correspondence in some circumstances). To arrange it, contact your local Intreo centre or branch office.

3. Opening a Bank Account

You’ll need an Irish bank account so you can get paid. As a Contracting PLUS client, we support you by recommending the best bank for opening your personal account to help make the process quick, straightforward, and stress-free.

Expenses You Can Claim

Not a lot of people know this, but if you’re relocating within Ireland then there are a number of expenses you can claim which will boost your retention rate over the first few months of your new contract. The more popular ones are the cost of your travel to your new location, the cost of your hotels, B&B’s initially, and then the cost of your rent for a period of time.

If relocation is required to take up a role, considerable expenses applicable to your move can be claimed. You’ll benefit from immediate tax relief as we offset these against your pay.
